    Specifically for people with little or no prior carpentry experience, our courses can take you from complete beginner to certified domestic carpenter.

    It is ideally suited to tradesmen who require the skills and knowledge to gain entry to the industry..

    Courses

    As well as home study you will be spending three weeks at one of our training venues where you will complete practical training, assessments and exams. You will have up to one and a half years to complete your programme.

    Upon successful completion you will gain an industry recognised qualification - City and Guilds 6217 / 02 Construction Skills - Carpentry and Joinery.

    The programme comprises theory work which can be completed at you home or wherever you find convenient and practical workshop days. The theory modules have been developed to provide a good understanding of the subject matter in preparation for the practical days. The practical days are designed to instil in you the skills to work as a carpenter.

    Modules include:-

    • Interpreting drawings and specifications related to the work required
    • Safely using protective equipment
    • Safely using tools and equipment
    • Measuring, marking out, fitting, positioning, securing and finishing the work
    • Using and maintaining hand tools
    • Installing skirting boards
    • Installing floor joists
    • Installing door linings
    • Hanging internal doors
    • Making casement windows
    • Fixing and stabilising trussed rafters
    • Applying bevels and using pattern rafters
    • Providing access to work (e.g. extension ladders, mobile scaffolding towers)
    • Safely operating wood machines such as circular saws, planers and mortice machines

    You will receive a set of industry standard manuals along with a study matrix to guide you though the course syllabus.

    You will be supported throughout your learning programme by experienced instructors who are available by telephone or email to deal with your questions or any difficulties you may encounter.

    The Skills Centre are proud to be accredited by the Open & Distance Learning Quality council. The council are the UK guardian of quality in distance learning. Accreditation includes rigorous assessment of administrative and tutorial methods, educational materials and publicity.
